DOT Moves to Add Fentanyl Tests for Commercial Truck Drivers
A New Layer of Safety for U.S. Roads The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has proposed adding fentanyl and its metabolite, norfentanyl, to its federal drug-testing program for safety-sensitive employees, including commercial truck drivers. The rule was published in the Federal Register on Sept. 2, with public comments due by Oct. 17. DOT cited fentanyl’s growing role in overdose deaths across the country as a primary reason for the move. Unlike in the past, where fentanyl was often mixed with heroin, it is now increasingly used as a standalone drug, raising concerns for driver safety on America’s highways. Why Fentanyl Testing Matters The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved adding fentanyl (urine and oral fluid testing) and norfentanyl (urine only) to federal testing panels earlier this year.
