  • SHIC-Funded Study First to Confirm Porcine Astrovirus 4 as a Primary Cause of Tracheitis and Bronchi...
With the goal of determining if porcine astrovirus 4 alone can cause respiratory disease, a collaborative team of investigators from North Carolina State University, USDA Agricultural Research Service, Iowa State University, and University of California Santa Cruz investigated if piglets infected with PoAstV4 exhibited reproducible lesions in the respiratory tract. Funded by the Swine Health Information Center, the study design included infecting PoAstV4 naïve piglets with the virus and characterizing the resulting infection and pathological lesions. Infected piglets shed the virus in nasal secretions, exhibited tracheitis and bronchitis with virus detected in tissues, and developed a productive immune response to infection. Results from this study are the first to confirm that PoAstV4 can be a primary cause of epitheliotropic viral infection in the respiratory tract of piglets. `Find the industry summary for study #23-077 here. PoAstV4 has frequently been detected in nasal swabs fr ...[TheTopNews] Read More.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is leading a high-level trade mission to the Dominican Republic this month, opening new doors for American pork producers and processors. With the Caribbean nation representing the fourth-largest market for U.S. agricultural exports in the Western Hemisphere—and the top market under the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)—the timing and potential impact of this mission is especially significant for the pork sector. Scheduled for July 13–17, the USDA delegation includes nearly 50 agribusinesses and state officials from California, Colorado, and Washington. The goal: expand market access, deepen trade ties, and build relationships with buyers not only from the Dominican Republic but also from neighboring Haiti and Jamaica. Pork Exports: A Growth Opportunity U.S. agricultural exports to the Dominican Republic reached a record $2.2 billion in 2024, up from $800 million in 2007. • President Trump Signs Into Law Animal Health, Tax Safeguards for America’s Pork Producers
The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) today thanked President Trump for signing into law the “One Big, Beautiful Bill.” NPPC President Duane Stateler, a pork producer from McComb, Ohio, said, “The ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ is one of the most consequential pieces of legislation for American agriculture in years. It helps producers protect our herds by fending off foreign animal diseases, and it also cuts red tape, allowing us to more easily pass down our farms to the next generation.” “NPPC thanks President Trump for signing “One Big, Beautiful Bill” into law and Chairmen Thompson and Boozman for listening to our input and shepherding this legislation through their respective chambers. We look forward to continuing to work with congressional partners this year on a ‘skinny’ farm bill, which should include measures to prevent a patchwork of conflicting state farming regulations and bring further certainty to the pork industry.” NPPC advocated… ...[TheTopNews] Read More.
