The second-biggest vote getter in the La Crosse School Board race is a newcomer, while the current chair was not reelected by just 34 votes. Loretta Hass received the second-most votes in the spring election that ended Tuesday, getting 6,376 of the 33,998 votes cast. Meanwhile, Deb Suchla, the current board chair, lost the three-seat race by a mere 34 votes. Trevor Sprague (Inc.)6,845-xLoretta Hass6,376-xScott Neumeister (Inc.)6,176-xDeb Suchla (Inc.)6,142Jake Williams5,730Lee Weis2,569 Suchla was in her second tenure on the school board — reelected in 2023. She had also been a board member from 2001-2018, as well. Trevor Sprague had the most votes and Scott Neumeister came in third — both enter their second terms. The three new members will serve three-year terms on the nine-member board. Each year there is an election for three seats. Next year the terms for Tim Alberts, Jim Bagniewski and Adam Manka will be up. • Holmen voters approve extra funding for school operations, one year after a simi...
A turnaround for the Holmen school district, a full year after voters there narrowly rejected a school funding measure. On Tuesday, a funding referendum for the Holmen schools passed, with unofficial results showing 4041 yes votes to 2746 no. As a result, the Holmen district will be allowed to exceed revenue limits, getting an extra $4.5 million for each of the next five years, to help pay for operations. This vote comes a year after district voters turned down a $19 million funding referendum, by about 90 votes. All but one precinct passed the ballot measure. No new building construction is in the works for Holmen, but work is planned to make school entrances more secure, and replace security camera systems in all the district buildings. • Tryggestad ecstatic as La Crosse County Board will be nearly 50% women, while Do...
For the current La Crosse County Board chair, Tina Tryggestad, it’s nice to be reelected for a sixth term, but she’s more ecstatic about who joins her. With the reelection of Monica Kruse and Kelly Leibold, plus the additions of Beth Piggush, Joanna Drazkowski and Lia Manock — plus Tryggestad — in contested races, the board will have 14 women out of the 30 seats representing the county. “That, I think is big,” Tryggestad said. “I just like to say that out loud. “I think that’s incredible. We’re 50% of the population. We should be representing the district in proportion, I feel like. And this is the largest number of women, I think. I wouldn’t be able to quote that for sure, but it’s the highest number we’ve ever had since my time on the board.” The rest of those women winning in uncontested races to represent La Crosse County include: Kathy Allen Emily Anderson Peg Isola Angie Manke Kim Cable Anna McBride Kristie Tweed Beth Arentz-Clements WINNING COUNTY BOARD MEANS A LOT FOR STEVE DOYLE He’s a longtime Wisconsin state Assembly rep., but Steve Doyle has served longer on the La Crosse County Board — much longer. There’s no comparing the scope of the two races — Doyle won his last state Assembly seat where over 36,500 votes were cast, while he won Tuesday’s county board race 757-432 over Chris Muller. But winning in the spring election like he did this time around, and being voted back onto the county board, is a big deal to Doyle, who has been a member since 1986 — that’s not a typo. “That’s where the decisions really are made,” Doyle said of the county board’s work. “Local government is where the rubber meets the road and we actually get things done. At the state level — and God forbid the federal level — it seems like there’s always gridlock and partisan fighting and it just gets kind of annoying. But we get things done at the local level, so I’m excited to be back on the County Board.” Other wins in contested county board races included: Grant Mathu Jeff Fimreite … [TheTopNews] Read More.

  • Democratic-backed Chris Taylor wins Wisconsin Supreme Court race, growing libera...
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Democratic-backed candidate Chris Taylor won election to the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday, growing the liberal majority on the court as cases affecting congressional redistrictingunion rights and other hot button issues await in the perennial battleground state. Taylor, who focused her campaign on abortion rights, defeated Republican-backed Maria Lazar in the fourth straight victory for liberal court candidates dating back to 2020. Liberals are now guaranteed to hold a majority on the court until at least 2030. Democrats tightened their control of the court just months before a November election in which they seek to keep the governor’s office and flip the state Legislature, where Republicans have held the majority since 2011. Democrats aspire to undo a host of Republican-enacted laws that made Wisconsin a focal point for the nation’s conservative movement in the 2010s. This year’s Supreme Court election stands in stark contrast to the swing state’s previous two, where national spending records were set in battles over majority control. Spending and national attention was down dramatically this year without control of the court at stake. Liberals took control of the state’s top court in 2023, ending 15 years under a conservative majority. They held onto their majority with last year’s victory in a race that drew involvement from President Donald Trump and billionaires George Soros and Elon Musk, who personally handed out $1 million checks to voters in the state. Liberals argued that democracy was at stake in the 2025 election, noting that when the court was controlled by conservative justices in 2020 it came just one vote shy of siding with Trump in his attempt to invalidate enough votes to overturn his loss in that year’s presidential election. The court under liberal control has reversed several election-related rulings, including one that overturned a ban on absentee ballot drop boxes, and it is poised to once again be in the spotlight around the 2028 presidential election. Races for the court are officially nonpartisan, but support for candidates breaks down mostly along partisan lines. The seat was open due to the retirement of a conservative justice. Taylor, who is a state Appeals Court judge and previously worked for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, focused much of her campaign on abortion rights. One of her TV ads argued… [TheTopNews] Read More.
