Children who live in area cities are learning about sustainable food, where it comes from, plus getting hands on experience cooking some meals they can enjoy. They’re taking part in the Learn to Live Local Youth Day Camp. It’s hosted by the Mormon Coulee 4-H through a grant from the La Crosse Area Community Foundation. Kaarina Dunn, Project Coordinator Kaarina Dunn, the project coordinator, said most of the kids haven’t learned these skills in school. “Most of the kids aren’t exposed to this at all. They’re so excited about cutting up things for the tacos we’re making later or going grocery shopping for fruit and learning about how different fruits can go into the foods that we eat. And so, a really special thing about this is seeing the kids spark like when they learn something like, ‘Whoa, that’s how that works’, or ‘Whoa, that’s why I do this’. It that specialness, honestly, what makes this the best part of the camp.” Dunn says the camp gives them confidence to take the skills they learn and share them at home. “Giving these kids this information at a young age, it really makes them start thinking about the world around them and how the little choices that they’re making each day affects the greater world, honestly.” They spent the morning at the People’s Food Coop in La Crosse making taco seasoning that they can take home at the end of the day. Rainy weather canceled a trip to a local farm on Thursday. About 40 children have participated in the Live to Learn camps this summer. Many are from La Crosse, Onalaska, and La Crescent.
