Michelin has introduced the X Multi Energy D2, a new regional-haul drive tire designed to improve fuel efficiency, durability, and traction for fleets operating in demanding stop-and-go environments. The tire is aimed at regional trucking operations where frequent acceleration, braking, varying road conditions, and rising fuel costs can place additional stress on tires and operating budgets. According to Michelin, the X Multi Energy D2 combines an updated tread pattern with a newly developed tread compound. These changes are intended to improve resistance to tread damage caused by high-torque vehicles and the repeated acceleration and braking common in regional-haul applications. The company says the design can help fleets maintain performance while reducing overall operating costs. One of the tire’s major features is Michelin’s Duracore casing, which incorporates Infinicoil and Powercoil technologies along with a reinforced bead design known as Duracoil Technology. Michelin designed the casing for up to 1 million miles of service and as many as four retreads, potentially allowing fleets to extend the useful life of the tire casing over multiple tread cycles. Fuel efficiency is another area Michelin says it has improved. The X Multi Energy D2 delivers 9% better rolling resistance compared with its predecessor, the Michelin X Multi Energy D. Lower rolling resistance can reduce the amount of energy required to keep a truck moving, which may help fleets lower fuel consumption over time. Michelin also focused on maintaining traction as the tire wears. In the company’s internal testing, the X Multi Energy D2 demonstrated 10% better wet handling performance and 16% better snow starting traction when worn compared with the previous-generation tire. These improvements are particularly relevant for regional fleets that operate throughout changing weather and road conditions. For truck manufacturers, the new tire also meets applicable Greenhouse Gas standards, allowing it to support vehicle configurations designed around fuel-efficiency and emissions requirements. These versions replace the Michelin X Multi Energy D tire in the corresponding sizes.
