President Donald Trump took a detour from an African reporter’s question about continued conflict between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, musing, “How is Ebola going?” The moment came after the president announced Monday that a steel company plans to invest billions in a plant in Iowa — the largest of its kind in history. Trump then took questions from reporters in the Oval Office when Hariana Verás, an Angolan White House correspondent, asked about the region. The DRC has faced decades of conflict in its mineral-rich east, where the government accuses neighboring Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group. The two countries signed a U.S.-brokered peace agreement in June 2025, but violence has persisted. “I just came from DRC,” Verás noted. “I was there a month ago, and I witnessed, again, Rwanda still killing a lot of Congolese. Mr. President, if you can do something — ” “And you witnessed it?” Trump butted in. “Yes, Mr. President,” she confirmed. “And I have evidence.” “How is Ebola?” Trump again interrupted. “How is Ebola going?” “Ebola is under control,” responded Verás. “Still, the country needs some help to fight Ebola, but the biggest problem is the war.” “I’ll make sure it works out,” the president promised. “That’s what I do. Shortly after this latest outbreak was announced in May, House Democrats shared a press release titled, “Trump Created the Perfect Storm to Allow for Rapid Spread of Ebola,” accusing the current administration of fueling the outbreak by dismantling USAID, cutting U.S. assistance to the region, and firing staff involved in global health programs. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, was quoted as saying at the time, “This is not efficiency. It is dangerous neglect. The United States spent years building the relationships, supply chains, laboratories, and community health networks that help stop deadly diseases at their source.
