President Donald Trump announced Monday that Mesabi Metallics will build a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa, welcome news for many GOP candidates in tight races this year — and they made sure to praise the president at least 12 times during remarks from the Oval Office. The plant is set to open in 2030. Another $3 billion will be sent to the company in Nashwauk, Minnesota, that will process the mine’s raw ore. Trump made the announcement alongside representatives from Mesabi’s leadership. The company was founded by brothers Shashi and Ravi Ruia, and the former’s sons Anshuman Ruia and Prashant Ruia are also part of the leadership team. Ravi’s son Rewant Ruia is chariman. The group was also joined by Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Export-Import Bank Chairman John Jovanovic as well as by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Governor Kim Reynolds, Sen. Joni Ernst (R), and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks. All were effusive in their praise for the president, despite the fact that no announcement has been made in terms of more concrete details pertaining to the plant, including where it will be located. Lutnick first insisted the plant is the result of “your 232 tariffs, the steel tariffs at work.” He added, “Without those tariffs this mine doesn’t get built and the steel plant does not get built.” Wright told reporters the establishment of the plant is the “Trump reindustrialization of America hitting the ground at a series scale … President Trump got elected to reindustrialize our country.” Trump then introduced the team from Mesabi, who thanked him for “bringing back the importance of building things in America,” for his “policy and leadership” that “made it possible,” and for his “leadership and confidence … for standing behind American investment and American industry and for making this possible.” The president next introduced Reynolds, who began, “First of all, Mr. President, I want to say thank you to you.
