House Republican Says ‘We Should Do a Little More’ for the Rich

Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI) made a remarkable argument on Thursday, explaining that in his opinion, Congress “should do a little more” for wealthy Americans. The moment came during a Republican policy discussion on the economy featuring Michigan gubernatorial candidate Rep. John James (R-MI), House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), Grothman, and other GOP officials. The panel focused on the party’s economic agenda and its differences with Democrats ahead of the midterm elections. Alleging that President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill was designed to cut taxes for “the average guy,” he insisted, pointing his finger at the crowd, “Don’t let anybody tell you that people running, uh, Congress right now are looking out for the rich. Actually, I think we should do a little more for them, but, you know, right now, uh, we are doing all we can to help the middle class, right?” Grothman went on to hypothetically note, again referencing the president’s massive federal budget reconciliation statute, “If I was designing a tax cut for the rich, I wouldn’t talk about overtime. I wouldn’t talk about car loans, right? We are aimed at helping the average guy.” According to CNN data guru Harry Enten, however, in a Saturday ranking of Trump’s five “biggest drops” in polling, government spending was ranked fourth. As he explained, the Big Beautiful Bill added $4 trillion to the national debt, and sent the president’s approval rating on the issue from -12% to -34%. Grothman, who is currently serving his sixth term in the House of Representatives, is up for re-election in November. He will face Democrat Brad Smith. Though the ranking is now six years old, it’s worth noting that an Axios analysis in 2020 crowned the congressman the most “loyal” Trump supporter among all Republicans in Congress, giving him a “Trump Loyalty Index” of 93.
