Former federal prosecutor Jeffrey Toobin said that while President Donald Trump may prevail in his latest legal fight, the president has nonetheless committed a political and moral “obscenity.” Trump has fixated on the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., going so far as to put his name on the building and rename it The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. In May, a judge ordered Trump’s name be taken off the venue, which the administration did, but the removal took place behind a tarp so that the public could not see. On Thursday, however, the Kennedy Center board, which is stuffed with Trump appointees, voted to put the president’s name back on the building in a move that The New York Times said is “aggressively testing a federal judge’s order.” The board also voted again to close the center for two years for renovations. Toobin joined Thursday’s AC360 on CNN, where he blasted Trump, who is also the Kennedy Center chair, over the move: It’s absurd and Orwellian, especially considering he didn’t renovate it. He destroyed the Kennedy Center. I mean, that’s what’s so bizarre about this whole thing is he’s taking credit for something that he did the opposite of. But legally, I think he might actually win because he is not technically changing the name. The other part of the order, the judge’s original order, said [the Kennedy Center] shut down for two years without any study. Now they have actually done some study and they think two years is reasonable. And so, I think he might actually win his case. But from a political or moral point of view, this whole thing is an obscenity.
