Traditional Workers Memorial Day ceremony in La Crosse honors people who died on...
About a month before America’s traditional Memorial Day, labor leaders in La Crosse honor the memory of area residents who died on the job, or as a result of work-related injuries. The yearly Workers Memorial Day program took place Tuesday at the Green Island gazebo, organized by the Western Wisconsin AFL-CIO. La Crosse Mayor Shaundel Washington Spivey led persons attending the ceremony in a call of “hold the line” to prevent future workplace injuries and deaths. Speakers also included La Crosse’s state lawmakers, Brad Pfaff, Jill Billings, and Steve Doyle. Labor leaders and local political figures led the Tuesday ceremony at the Green Island gazebo. Labor organizers continued the custom of planting white crosses on the lawn near the gazebo, with each cross bearing the name of someone in the region whose death was somehow related to work, as more than 100 names were read. A late April ceremony in La Crosse has been held for another year, to honor the memory of people who died at work, or from causes related to work. The Western Wisconsin AFL-CIO conducted its yearly Workers Memorial ceremony on Tuesday at La Crosse’s Green Island Park. The program includes a roll call of names of more than 100 workers, as white crosses are planted on the lawn. The worker ceremonies are usually held on April 28th, marking the anniversary of when the Occupational Safety and Health Act became law in 1970.
