Being named Mrs. Oktoberfest in La Crosse this year came as a surprise involving law enforcement for Kathy Van Kirk-Przywojski. Van Kirk-Przywojski said learning she was being named Mrs. O came during a backyard barbecue. “Sheriff (John) Siegel appeared with a stern look on his face,” Van Kirk-Przywojski said. “Said he had papers to serve for Kathy Van Kirk, and I thought, ‘What on earth could I have possibly done?'” Then Siegel’s wife Regina, the 2023 Mrs. O, came running with flowers, saying “You’re the new Mrs. 2026 Oktoberfest.” She then had to hold onto that secret until Saturday night, when it was announced to the pubic. Van Kirk-Przywojski said her family has a tradition of putting out chairs on the Maple Leaf Parade route, early on parade morning. Each year, the royal family gets to design their own buttons. For Van Kirk-Przywojski, she came up with the slogan “Peace, Love, and Oktoberfest,” in line with her love of the 1970s. Almost all of the royal family has now been unveiled — with one secret remaining, as the event begins Thursday — the Festmaster. That introduction will happen at the Festmasters Ball on Wednesday night, when current leader Brent Smith passes the torch to the next. High school principal Eric James has been arrested and charged after authorities discovered four hidden recording devices in areas where female students changed clothes at Brooke High School in Wellsburg, West Virginia. A custodian first found a device disguised as a pen, and investigators later found three more devices in the girls' locker rooms and a room used by the dance team. Authorities say footage recovered from one of the devices showed James placing it and adjusting the camera angle. James faces felony charges related to breaking and entering and illegally intercepting electronic communications.
