Halliburton has signed two non-binding agreements aimed at supporting new oil and natural gas development projects in Venezuela, expanding the energy services company’s involvement as international firms explore opportunities in the country’s energy sector. The Houston-based company announced on September 21 that it will work with Eneva SA, Brazil’s largest private natural gas operator, to identify potential natural gas development opportunities in Venezuela. Halliburton also signed a separate memorandum of understanding with engineering firm West-Construcciones CA, or WESCA, to support field development and planning activities. The agreements represent another step in Halliburton’s potential return to a market where it previously maintained significant operations. The company reduced and ultimately shut down its primary Venezuelan activities in 2020 as U.S. sanctions and political tensions limited energy-sector business in the country. Halliburton is one of the world’s largest providers of oilfield services, including drilling, hydraulic fracturing, well construction, reservoir evaluation, and production technologies. Its expertise could become important as Venezuela attempts to restore aging energy infrastructure and increase oil and natural gas production. The latest agreements come as several U.S. and international companies examine possible investments in Venezuela. Chevron has announced plans to expand its Venezuelan operations, while ExxonMobil has held discussions with government officials about a potential return. Venezuela holds more than 303 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves, the largest total in the world, according to OPEC data cited by Transport Topics. The Trump administration has also encouraged U.S. energy companies to explore opportunities in Venezuela as part of its broader effort to increase oil supplies. Adam Carolla accused Colin Kaepernick of overcompensating for growing up with two White, adoptive parents by sporting a “26 foot afro” to appear more Black than he really is. The veteran podcaster went on a searing rant against Kaepernick — whom he branded a “race hustler and f*ckin’ idiot” — during the Monday episode of his podcast, claiming the ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback has grown his hair out to turbocharge his social justice crusade. And the best way to do that is by not looking like a White dude, he said. “You don’t present as Black! The reason you have a 26 foot Afro now is you’re trying to present as Black,” Carolla fumed. “You don’t present as Black! Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.) told The New York Times in a just-released interview, where she publicly mulls a presidential run. "And you don't—and just in life in general—life doesn't wait for you to be ready for things. Sometimes life just makes things ready for you." Ocasio-Cortez, after almost eight years in Congress as a U.S. representative for Queens and the Bronx and many, many fawning news cycles in which her democratic socialist views are received rather warmly, is now considering either a run for president or going after Chuck Schumer's Senate seat. Either one would be an elevation—but also a risk. Schumer is 75, but it's not clear that he's interested in stepping aside for an ascendant Ocasio-Cortez; this may well be Ocasio-Cortez trying to push him out. "I don't think that my decisions would come down to deference," she told the Times. I would imagine other factors are weighing on her decision: She's successfully campaigned with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.), who is now 85, in the past. He will be 87 by the time the next presidential election year rolls around.
