- Reflecting Pool to be drained as Trump again blames ‘vandals’ for re...
Trump said vandals cut a long slit in it and possibly dumped fertiliser in the water, and later threatened to sue over reporting on the pool. [TheTopNews] Read More.14 hours ago - Retired WSU professor aims for 200 holes of golf in 12 hours, for charity
For many golfers, playing nine holes in one day might be plenty. But one area golfer played more than 100 holes on Monday, hoping to reach 200 in 12 hours. Retired Winona State professor Bob Newberry spent most of the day at Coulee Golf Bowl in Onalaska, playing golf to raise money for a medical center in Africa, in connection with the La Crosse-Valley View Rotary Club. After several hours, and more than 110 holes, Bob was asked how he was holding up. “You gotta stay hydrated, and you gotta eat while you’re out there,” said Newberry, “’cause we’re talkin’ 12 hours, it’s gonna be 30 miles plus.” He said he changed shoes three times, as well as putting on different shirts and socks. Bob Newberry, retired from the Winona State faculty, pursued the goal of playing 200 holes of golf in one day, changing clothes throughout the day. Bob figured he might complete 150 holes, admitting that 200 “sounds foolish.” But the money he collected will be used for X-ray equipment for the Chihoni Medical Health Center in Tanzania, where common conditions can go undiagnosed and lead to permanent health problems. He said raising money for such as cause is “what Rotarians do.” As of late Monday afternoon, Newberry’s best score of the day was a 38 on 9 holes, but he still maintained a few rounds in the 40’s. Evers returns to Onalaska, as part of his yearly “Pothole Patrol”
In the summertime, Wisconsin’s governor tries to spend a little time on the road…or technically, on the streets of the state, filling potholes. Governor Tony Evers began his annual “Pothole Patrol” in Onalaska on Monday, to call attention to transportation needs in the state. Evers has toured the state to fill potholes almost every year that he’s been governor, missing only 2020, the year of the COVID pandemic, keeping his campaign promise to “fix the damn roads.” The governor admits running into some fairly big holes. “I was in a city, I won’t say the name of that city, last year, and (a hole) was a foot deep,” said Evers. “It took a while to fill that hole.” The governor was given a safety vest before picking up a shovel for road work. Onalaska public works director Jarrod Holter went with Evers to help patch up a couple of streets near City Hall. “We’ve got about a hundred miles of street,” said Holter, and “there’s always streets in the rotation to be taken out.” “We hope to get 40 years out of a city street,” Holter says. He noted that 3rd Avenue and 6th Avenue, the streets Evers visited Monday, were both paved most recently in the late 70’s to early 80’s. Onalaska was the first stop on the governor’s yearly pothole-filling tour. Evers says close to 10,000 miles of roads have been fixed during his time as governor…equal to three round trips between Wausau and Disney World in Florida. The post Gov. MS NOW’s Chris Hayes went off on President Donald Trump and U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro, the latter of whom would not rule out charges against ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl. The president recently oversaw a major renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, but since the job was completed, the pool has been plagued by algae blooms. Last week, visitors to the pool could see paint peeling away from the bottom. The algae has given the pool a distinct green hue instead of the intended American flag blue. Some tourists have reportedly been ripping off pieces of the paint to take as souvenirs. On Friday, Trump railed against Karl, whom he falsely accused of “trying to rip the rubber off of the surface” of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The day before, ABC News posted a video of Karl merely holding up a piece of paint peeling off the bottom while reporting on the state of the pool. The president has baselessly blamed vandals for sabotaging the Reflecting Pool’s recent renovation, which has been marred by the paint issue and algae blooms. On Monday, Trump even suggested some person or persons dumped fertilizer into the pool and somehow cut a 250-long gash into its side. In subsequent tellings, Trump increased the length to 300 and then 350. On Monday’s All In, Hayes played a clip of Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Peter Doocy asking Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, if Karl had run afoul of the law. “President Trump’s got a Crime Stoppers tip for you,” Doocy told Pirro. “He says, ‘lightweight ABC reporter Jonathan Karl was seen sticking his hand into the pool and trying to rip the rubber off the surface.’ Judge, is Jonathan Karl from ABC in trouble?” Here is Pirro’s response and Hayes’ reaction: PIRRO: Well, you know, it depends. You know, anyone who is in a position of vandalizing or attempting to vandalize the Reflecting Pool will face the criminal justice system in D.C. Look, the president has made it a priority to make D.C. not only safe, but beautiful. And there are several citations that have been handed out to individuals. And these are cases that will be prosecuted to the full extent. If there are more serious products that are put into the reflecting pool to create more algae or a bigger problem, then we’ll consider more serious… [TheTopNews] Read More.14 hours ago - Tech giant Oracle cuts 21,000 jobs as it embraces AI
