  • La Crosse County sets aside $1 million to prepare contract for jail renovation
The La Crosse County Board is supporting contract talks for a redesign of the county jail. The resolution passed on Thursday calls for agreeing on a contract with a design firm, not to exceed $1.3 million, with Kraemer Brothers & Klein McCarthy. The design phase of the project could last about a year, with the actual renovation project expected to cost around $10 million. Jail officials say more space is needed to house male inmates with mental health needs. Part of the facility, which opened in 1997, could also be renovated to provide improved space for female prisoners. La Crosse County Board chair Tina Tryggestad and La Crosse County Sheriff John Seigel both talked on WIZM this week about how the jail has become a mental health facility, but it was not designed for that purpose. In other county business, some athletic fields now operated by La Crosse County and the town of Shelby could soon be managed by the La Crosse school district. On Thursday, the board approved lease negotiations on the ball field property on 33rd Street South, which would allow the school district and the town of Shelby to work out an agreement on the land. The fields could continue to be used by organizations including UWL and the Boys and Girls Club.
