  • Community Center, grocery store among closed library building proposals
The North Side Community Library closed last week, and the process has now begun to determine the future of the building. Monday, the Mayor’s office provided WIZM News with those who submitted what’s called RFEI (Request for Expression of Interest) to the city. Those documents were in response to an open records request made by WIZM.  Although several people and organizations came forward, only two proposals met the requirements from the City of La Crosse regarding the RFEI for the now-former library building.   Aside from the two major proposals, some emails were just people commenting on the fate of the library that closed on June 18. Other RFEIs were from organizations that were interested in using the building but failed to fill out the forms requested by the city.  They included a rehabilitation center for recovering addicts, practice space for musicians, and a bed and breakfast. Of the two major proposals, one came from a group of north side residents who wanted to turn the building into a neighborhood center. They came forward in March to discuss their plans to use the building in a variety of ways, including having a smaller function library.   The other RFEI was from a group that included two La Crosse City Council members and three La Crosse County Board members. They proposed developing the building into a municipal grocery store to eliminate a food desert in the neighborhood.    Council President Tamra Dickinson was one of the people who put the RFEI together. When asked about whether this was a conflict of interest, she didn’t see it as that.  TAMRA DICKINSON ON GROCERY STORE PROPOSAL  Skip Ad “I see it as being an interest for the north side,” Dickinson told WIZM. “We don’t have a current grocery store that’s a neighborhood grocery store. We have a lovely new Kwik Trip, but that it’s the far north side of the city. And therefore, when 40 percent of most of La Crosse do not drive, that’s a long distance to go either way to try and get to even a Kwik Trip. So, I don’t understand why it would be a conflict of interest. This was the expression of an idea, and that’s what it is.”  The others with Dickinson on that RFEI included councilmember Rosanne Northwood, La Crosse County Board members Kelly Leibold, Dillon Mader and Joe Kovacevich, as well as Maureen Freedland, Wyatt Molling, and Trevor Yeoman.  Ultimately, Dickinson said the group decided that there were too many obstacles… [TheTopNews] Read More.

  • DOJ investigating NYC coffee shop over hostile social post about pro-Israel poli...
The Department of Justice (DOJ) says it has opened an investigation into a New York City coffee shop after it blasted Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., in a social media post, saying it should not have served him, and he should never come back due to his support of Israel. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said the DOJ has opened an investigation into the Poetica Coffee Shop in Brooklyn.Dhillon says the department is aware of the "denial of service taunts" directed at Goldman and says federal law prohibits public accommodations, including coffee shops, from discriminating against patrons based on race, religion, or national origin. Dhillon says the alleged denial of service could violate federal anti-discrimination law and says enforcement action is possible. In a now-deleted Facebook post, Poetica Coffee said it issued a refund to Goldman after learning that he had stopped by the location with his young daughter. The shop added that it would have simply turned Goldman away if staff had recognized him at the time.SMOOTHIE KING FIRES EMPLOYEES WHO REFUSED TO SERVE CUSTOMERS OVER TRUMP SWEATSHIRT"Hey Congressman Dan Goldman, we see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. Do you see how it doesn’t taste like genocide juice? Or are you still having a hard time telling the difference?" the post stated, referring to Goldman’s support for Israel and accusations that the Jewish state has committed genocide against Palestinians during the war in Gaza."See, here at Poetica, we don’t serve racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers, or anyone in between," the post continued. "Too bad we didn’t recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away. We issued you a refund—we don’t need your money (it’s probably coming from AIPAC anyways). Enjoy your loss on Tuesday. Don’t ever come to Poetica."In a statement on social media, Goldman said he was disappointed by the shop's remarks."I’m sorry to see this post," he said. "The barista could not have been nicer to my 7-year-old daughter and me—allowing her to use the bathroom even though we had not purchased anything. I made sure to buy a coffee in return for her kindness. I hope you at least make sure she gets the tip that she deserved."In response, the shop said it was the barista's idea to refund Goldman's purchase. A New York City coffee shop criticized Rep. • Fox News Anchor Pours Cold Water On JD Vance’s Iran Deal Update: ‘Might Not ...
Fox News anchor John Roberts poured some cold water on Vice President JD Vance’s latest update on his talks with Iran on Monday. Vance took questions from reporters before boarding Air Force Two to return home from Switzerland, where he met with the Iranian delegation. Vance hyped a return to weapons inspectors, a key part of the Obama-era nuclear deal, as a way to verify Iran lives up to its part of the deal. “Okay, the Vice President boarding the plane, Air Force Two, and heading back to the United States after a couple of days of negotiations there in the beautiful part of the world, Lucerne, Switzerland, with the Iranian delegation. Sandra saying that he’s achieved some success in setting up a mechanism to keep the Strait of Hormuz open,” Roberts began, recapping Vance’s remarks. “Though a lot of people would say American firepower is all you need to do that, setting up the mechanism to achieve a lasting ceasefire, and the fact that the Iranians say that they will allow inspectors to come in, in terms of their nuclear program,” Roberts added, offering a small jab at the administration for not using military force to gain control of the Strait. “The Vice President there with a caveat that says we don’t know exactly what that means. And if history is any guide, might not mean much,” concluded Roberts. “Yeah, adding that it’s been a very confusing process to negotiate with the Iranians, but that positive talk about getting that oil moving is what continues to send oil prices lower, now near $74 a barrel. The U.S. stock market’s still hovering near all-time highs, so as long as the messaging continues to be that — you know, we have reason to believe that the White House is happy with what they’ve seen so far — John,” added co-anchor Sandra Smith. “And the word from the administration — and you and I know this because we were on a call with a senior administration official a little more than a week ago — is that if this all transpires in the way that the White House hopes it will, it has the potential to transform the Middle East,” Roberts continued, adding: The Vice President reiterated that again, but he also said, “We haven’t built the house yet.” And I would think, of all the things, all the houses… [TheTopNews] Read More.
