Mike Waltz, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., told CNN’s Dana Bash directly that he stands behind President Donald Trump’s decision to ban her network — as well as MS NOW and Politico — from the White House. In a tense skirmish on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, Bash confronted Waltz about the ban — which took effect on Saturday as reporters from all three access were denied access to the White House. “On Friday, President Trump banned CNN, MSNOW, and Politico from the White House,” Bash said. “The president, as I mentioned, is about to host the Chinese leader. Historically, it was the United States pushing countries like China for greater press freedoms. Now President Trump is the one backsliding on these rights. Are you comfortable with this?” Waltz went to the mat to defend Trump’s move, which has been denounced by the White House Correspondents Association, press freedom advocates and media observers from across the idealogical spectrum. “The president is absolutely within his rights to limit journalists to government facilities, particularly when, in his opinion, they’re not behaving as good-faith journalists,” Waltz said. “And that’s just not his opinion. That’s the Supreme Court’s opinion. There are multiple cases — Zemel vs. Rusk, off the top of my head, and I’m not a lawyer. That said, look, you can have the ability to speak. You can have ability to publish as an open and free press. But you don’t have an inherent right to any government facility that you want, whether it’s Langley or the White House. And so I’ll leave it to the lawyers, but I think the president’s absolutely spot on here.” Bash called out Trump’s stated reason for the ban. “Mr. Ambassador, you are a decorated veteran,” Bash said. “You served in an elite unit, the Green Berets, for 27 years defending freedoms like the First Amendment. (Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call via AP Images) President Donald Trump said Sunday that his planned 250-foot Triumphal Arch will now double as a “top grade military complex.” In a post to Truth Social, the president said, “At the strong request of the United States Military, and for National Security purposes, I have agreed to convert the magnificent Triumphal Arch, planned since the Civil War Era many years ago, at the Receptive Circle adjoining the Arlington Memorial Bridge, into a top grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch, to house, store, and have the rapid ability to use large numbers of drones, plus Snipers, on both the roof and plaza areas, and additionally have and hold large quantities of sniper ammunition in storage.” The project has come under controversy on numerous fronts. A group of Vietnam veterans are suing to stop it — arguing that the arch would block views of Arlington National Cemetary and requires Congressional authorization to proceed. And the FAA announced Friday that the arch would need to have a flame going on top at all times, so that planes can pass safely. The administration has acknowledged the arch would have “adverse effects” on the area’s landscape, but claims those effects “cannot be fully avoided.
