AP Photo/Rahmat Gul Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH) filed a motion seeking to remove the tarp from the front of the Kennedy Center and blasting President Donald Trump’s administration for its “petty act of defiance” of previous court orders. Shortly after his second inauguration, Trump appointed himself to the board for the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, and added several of his allies to the board as well, who then named him chair. The new Trump-controlled board voted to change the name to add the president’s name, and the center’s website, social media, and other digital branding were updated to say “The Trump Kennedy Center” and his name was added to the building’s façade. Beatty is a Kennedy Center board member and objected to the renaming. She filed a lawsuit in late December challenging the “illegal renaming,” arguing that “[b]ecause Congress named the center by statute, changing the Kennedy Center’s name requires an act of Congress.” She has been represented by a legal team led by Norm Eisen, along with the organization he co-founded, Democracy Defenders Action, and the Washington Litigation Group. Last month, Judge Christopher Cooper, an Obama appointee of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, ruled in Beatty’s favor, ordering Trump’s name to be removed from the Kennedy Center by Friday, June 12. On the day of the deadline, Trump filed a motion seeking a stay of the removal of his name, which Cooper denied, and Trump then appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, getting denied once again. Workers spent hours slowly putting up scaffolding in front of the Kennedy Center to reach the letters. Several commentators noted that when the letters were installed back in December, cherry pickers were used to do the job much quicker (see photo below), leading to speculation the scaffolding was ordered to create additional delays and give Trump’s appeals more time. AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin The midnight deadline came and went without a single letter being taken down, and Trump filed another request for a 12-hour delay, citing the “thunderstorms in the District of Columbia that presented safety concerns for workers.” The real reason for the scaffolding became clear later that evening when workers began hanging up large tarps that concealed their work removing the letters in Trump’s name and blocked the view of the Kennedy Center façade afterwards. The Senate advanced a massive, Trump-backed housing package that proponents say will prevent the U.S. from becoming a "nation of renters." The upper chamber sent the 21st Century Road to Housing Act to the House on Monday after months of delay. After the heads of the House Financial Services Committee and Senate Banking Committee reached a deal last week, the package is on a glide path to President Donald Trump’s desk. It’s the first major push by Congress to address housing regulations in decades, and one Trump has been calling on lawmakers to complete as the midterm elections near. TRUMP-BACKED AFFORDABLE HOUSING OVERHAUL CLEARS SENATE, WHILE HOUSE GOP RAISES RED FLAGSLoaded with nearly 60 different provisions, the package broadly tackles rolling back some permitting regulations, launches several pilot grant programs to build, repair and push affordable housing construction, and blocks investors from buying up housing stock — a key provision pushed by Trump.Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., one of the architects of the package, said the legislation was "not the federal government big footing local government," but instead the federal government laying out tweaks to current programs and policies that "over time will make housing more affordable.""This is a housing package that will help increase supply and bring down costs," Warren said. "One way is by beating back private equity, so they won't invade your neighborhood, buy up all the houses, and turn America into a nation of renters." Warren said that among several things, the package increases access to manufactured housing by changing the federal definition to open up for more units to be constructed, pre-approved plan books for local governments to quickly approve new construction, and the waiving of some environmental review regulations for the construction of new homes.BIPARTISAN HOUSING PUSH ADVANCES, BUT TRUMP-BACKED INVESTOR BAN FACES RESISTANCE"It's not just one piece that's gonna solve a problem," Warren said. "It's a whole lot of smaller pieces that push in the same direction that's important." The package also tries to turbocharge housing stock by tying federal grants and incentives sought by local governments to housing construction. And there are tweaks to mortgages, with a push for small-dollar mortgages at $100,000 and updates to lending standards for manufactured homes. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, whose provision to establish pre-approved housing designs to speed up home construction made it into the package, said the legislation "sends a signal to state and local communities, to say, ‘Hey, guys, you really have… [TheTopNews] Read More.15 hours ago - Trump Is Losing His War On Algae
Like the Strait of Hormuz, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has exposed the limits of American power: President Donald Trump is also losing his war against algae. In the face of thriving algal blooms and peeling “American flag blue” paint, the National Park Service on Monday began draining the pool for repairs. A contractor performing the work told E&E News that those repairs would not be done by July 4. The prior rehab, which Trump rushed to complete via no-bid contracts and more than $14 million in spending so far, has failed. Trump, though, has blamed the problems on vandalism. And he has dispatched a hodgepodge army of law enforcement to protect the pool from “Radical Left Lunatics,” who he has said should face “Years in jail!” Observing the action at the pool over much of the long weekend, we did not spot any antifa dumping algae, as MAGA conspiracy theorists allege. The hot temperature, shallow water and flawed filtration system means the green Scenedesmus algae can conquer the pool without human help. There were, however, lots of cops. Walking around the pool at about 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, we counted at least seven US Marshals, some in “fugitive task force” tactical gear. They were supported by around 30 local police officers, volunteers who said they had been deputized for 30 days by the Marshals Service to help provide security for 250th anniversary celebrations. They came from Oklahoma City; Idaho Falls; Sarpy County, Nebraska; as well as Ontario, Wayne and Monroe counties in New York. They were mostly standing in the shade, and friendly. Some were hoping to catch Nationals game on a day off. They seemed sort of bored. The cops were coordinating with a handful of Park Police officers and maybe a dozen National Guard troops from Georgia and Louisiana, who were patrolling the pool in small groups. Over the last few days, agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have also appeared poolside. On Saturday, there were issues with radio frequency connections, so a mounted Park Police officer rode a white horse between groups of officers to share information on potential threats to the pool. He was less chatty than the volunteer officers, but he said that the horse’s name was Delilah, and that she was 21 years old. The officers explained that visitors could take paint chips, but… [TheTopNews] Read More.15 hours ago - Letter: Pump the Brakes on Software-Based EAS
In this letter to the editor, the author responds to the article “Sage Alerting Presents Software-Based EAS to the FCC.” Radio World welcomes letters to the editor on this or any story. Email radioworld@futurenet.com. Beware the millennials and Gen Z’ers who believe everything runs on ones and zeros. Of course, the core functions of Sage and DASDEC equipment are software-based. However, in order for the system to work, it requires monitoring of external analog audio sources from FM tuners, NOAA weather radio and satellite feeds — or soon to be dedicated internet “receivers.” In many small stations, then, once emergency traffic is detected, the EAS alert needs to be inserted into analog program streams ahead of audio processors, STL transmitters or codecs, all on the way to the transmitter. That’s a pretty blue box shown in the article, but who will design and connect the analog interface? Small station groups may only have a local contract engineer who comes in only when needed to “put the fires out.” The bigger groups? Too many stations for their engineering staff to keep track of. — Tom Taggart, Seven Ranges Radio, Parkersburg, W.V. Comment on this or any article. Email radioworld@futurenet.com.
