With La Crosse’s North Side Community Pool needing $1 million worth of repairs, the La Crosse School District and city leaders have been discussing building a new indoor community pool. They are now bringing those plans to the public, and Wednesday’s session at Black River Beach was the first of five scheduled community meetings. About 30 people were in attendance to learn the proposed pool could cost $30 million or more. A referendum could be held as early as this November, with a potential opening in 2028 or 2029. The cost of the pool would be shared between the city and school district while the YMCA could handle management of the facility. The push for a new facility comes as current infrastructure hits a breaking point. The city has already closed the outdoor pool near Logan Middle School for the season, while the indoor pool at Logan High School has been effectively obsolete for competitive use for decades. Superintendent Aaron Engel spoke about plans for a new pool at the Black River Beach meeting. Jay Odegaard, the city park director, said the demand for lessons is a primary driver for the project. “We turn away more people” requesting lessons because of a lack of time, Odegaard said, “than any other activity we offer.” Odegaard also noted that even newer facilities — like the Memorial Pool renovated at UW-La Crosse in 2016 — are already experiencing failures. Superintendent Dr. Aaron Engel explained that upgrading the current high school facility isn’t a viable fix. “It still won’t be the right length, it still won’t be the right depth,” Engel said. The district previously noted that the Logan pool was built in 1979 to 25-meter standards just as competitive swimming shifted to 25-yard requirements, leaving it unable to host meets. While the first meeting focused on the initial proposal, four more sessions are scheduled through May, and a community survey will be mailed to households this week to gather more specific feedback.
