Motorcycle riders are not the king of the jungle. Yes, putting on a heavy motorcycle jacket, strapping on a helmet and gloves, and firing up our bike can generate an intoxicating blend of confidence, endorphins, and the perception of invincibility. But the fact is that any pimply faced teen armed with nothing more than a Smart car will overpower even the biggest, toughest motorcycle rider on the planet without misspelling a single word in their text message. And that got me thinking. In the concrete jungle, motorcycles are at the bottom of the food chain, so we need to be prepared when we head out on the street. (Photos by Kevin Wing) Motorcycling makes us 4-5 times more likely to be injured per mile traveled when compared to driving a car, so it makes sense that we should take training classes and wear high-quality protective apparel. But what do we do to prepare for road rage situations? Not worth a conversation, you say? Research shows that road rage incidents have increased dramatically over the past 10 years. So yeah, I think it warrants a discussion. But rather than just examining road rage, I’d like to walk through a few ideas on how to best mitigate it. My goal today is to get you to think sensibly and strategically about getting from place to place safely when faced with a road rage incident. But understand, there are a myriad of possible scenarios that might play out and a wide range of training and experience in this room right now, so think of this as food for thought. The company’s legendary Manx racers dominated the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man for decades, while the Commando became one of the defining motorcycles of its era. For generations of enthusiasts, the Norton name represented speed, innovation, and unmistakable British character. Unfortunately, reputation isn’t built on heritage alone. Ride modes let the Atlas adapt to changing conditions and changing moods, putting the character of the bike at your fingertips. Ownership changes, financial troubles, failed promises, and eventual insolvency threatened to reduce Norton to little more than a nostalgic footnote in motorcycling history. Then in 2020, TVS Motor Company, an Indian multinational motorcycle manufacturer, acquired the brand, investing heavily in new facilities, engineering, and quality control. Its goal was to revive Norton as a legitimate premium motorcycle manufacturer. Which brings us to the Atlas. More than just another middleweight motorcycle, the Atlas represents an opportunity for Norton and its parent company, TVS, to demonstrate what the brand can become under new leadership. While nostalgia may get riders into the showroom, only a well-engineered motorcycle will convince them to sign on the dotted line. What’s in a name? The Atlas name carries far more significance than you might imagine. Unlike many modern model names invented by a marketing department, “Atlas” is rooted in Norton’s own history and represents one of the company’s most important turning points. The original Norton Atlas debuted in 1962 as an evolution of the Dominator parallel-Twin. American riders – one of Norton’s most important customer bases – were demanding larger, faster motorcycles capable of cruising comfortably at the higher speeds made possible by the expanding U.S. highway system. In response, Norton enlarged its proven 650cc Dominator engine to 745cc, creating the Atlas. At the time, the Atlas was one of the fastest production motorcycles available. Its overhead-valve parallel-Twin produced around 50 horsepower – an impressive figure in the early 1960s – and could top 120 mph under ideal conditions. The GS Trophy variant is shown in these photos. The new 2027 BMW F 450 GS features a new liquid-cooled 420cc parallel-Twin engine that is said to deliver 48 hp at 8,750 rpm and 32 lb-ft of torque at 6,750 rpm. It comes with a 6-speed transmission and a stainless-steel exhaust system. Standard equipment includes three ride modes (Rain, Road, and Enduro), lean-sensitive ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control, and Engine Drag Torque Control. The bike features a tubular steel frame and a wheelbase of 57.7 inches. It uses KYB suspension with 7.1 inches of travel front and rear. Brakes are supplied by Brembo, and it rides on cross-spoke 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels with tubeless tires. The standard two-piece seat sits at a height of 33.3 inches. Also included as standard are heated grips, a USB-C charging port, and a 6.5-inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity. Pricing has not yet been announced.
