  • VA Gov. Defends Redistricting as ‘Temporary, Responsive Effort’ to Counterac...
Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) defended the redistricting referendum in her state as a “temporary, responsive effort” that was necessary to counteract President Donald Trump saying he was “entitled” to additional Republican House seats in Texas. Tuesday evening, the results of the vote were called with “Yes” gaining a narrow majority, and multiple media outlets projecting a victory for a referendum that would redraw Virginia’s congressional maps in a far more favorable direction for the Democrats. Virginia’s election was the latest shifting of congressional district lines sparked by a push from Trump in red states, starting in Texas, to conduct a rare mid-decade redistricting to advantage the GOP. Predictably, the redistricting in Texas was cheered by Republicans but they booed the Virginia results, and the reverse was true for Democrats. Trump was especially incensed, posting on his Truth Social account that it was a “RIGGED ELECTION” and “Crooked Victory!” In the aftermath of the election, the Cook Political Report revised their ratings for Virginia from 3 Solid R, 1 Lean R, 1 Toss Up, and 5 Solid D to now 1 Solid R, 1 Lean D, 1 Likely D, and 8 Solid D. Virginia voters passed a constitutional amendment allowing Democrats to temporarily redraw the commonwealth's congressional map. Below are our race ratings for the new map. A transcript of their conversation is below: WOLF BLITZER, CNN HOST: And joining us now, the Democratic governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Abigail Spanberger…What was your immediate reaction when you learned last night that the voters in Virginia had approved the redistricting referendum that you supported? GOV. ABIGAIL SPANBERGER (D-VA): So, when we found the results out, I was really excited, but not surprised, because it’s been clear for a number of months that Virginians were really motivated to take this temporary responsive stance, and to do so by voting yes in our referendum. BLITZER: With about 99 percent of the vote now counted in Virginia, the yes votes stand at about 51 percent, the no votes stand at about 48 percent. That’s just a three-point difference in Virginia, whereas you defeated your Republican opponent in the governor’s race… [TheTopNews] Read More.

  • Laura Loomer’s Defamation Lawsuit Against HBO and Bill Maher Tossed Out: ‘He...
Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call via AP Images Laura Loomer’s defamation lawsuit against HBO and Bill Maher over a joke he told on an episode of Real Time With Bill Maher was tossed out by a Florida judge on Wednesday who granted summary judgment to the defendants because his comments were nothing more than a “well-known comedian…making a joke.” The dispute arose from the September 13, 2024 episode of Real Time, in which Maher made the following joke about Loomer and President Donald Trump: I think maybe Laura Loomer’s in an arranged relationship to affect the election because she’s very close to Trump. She’s 31, looks like his type. We did an editorial here a few years ago…it was basically, who’s Trump f*cking? Because I said, you know, it’s not nobody. He’s been a dog for too long, and it’s not Melania. I think we may have our answer this week. I think it might be Laura Loomer. In her complaint, Loomer argued that this was Maher “mak[ing] the false statement that Ms. Loomer is in a sexual relationship with Donald Trump, who is a married man” and thereby “falsely and maliciously accused Ms. Loomer of having committed adultery with Donald Trump.” After some initial pleadings and motions, the defendants moved for summary judgment. In an 18-page order, Judge James S. Moody Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, a Clinton appointee and the father of Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL), reviewed the facts behind Maher’s comment and news reports leading up to the Real Time episode, and ruled in the defendants’ favor. As the judge noted, Loomer readily admitted that she not only has a well-established history as a controversial and outspoken political figure, but that she has a long-running “close relationship” with the president, has frequently visited him at Mar-a-Lago or his other properties, has traveled with him on Air Force One, and attended other events as his guest, Moody’s opinion mentioned several of Loomer’s social media posts, including a video she posted where Trump says “I love this girl,” a post that she captioned “Best president ever. I love him so much,” another post with “a picture of her standing beside President Trump, looking up at him, captioned simply with the ‘heart- eyes’ emoji,” and so on. “Plaintiff’s frequent presence at President Trump’s side led to extensive chattering about the nature of their relationship… [TheTopNews] Read More.

  • ‘Wah, Wah, Wah’: AOC Mocks Republicans for Complaining About Virginia Electi...
Screenshot/MeidasTouch Network Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) mocked Republicans on Wednesday for complaining about redistricting in Virginia, responding to a question about GOP frustration with the election result by mimicking a baby crying. Virginia narrowly approved a mid-decade redistricting map on Tuesday that could give Democrats an electoral boost in ten out of eleven of the state’s House districts. The election outcome marked a Democratic win in the latest string of redistricting moves set off by President Donald Trump’s push for Republicans in Texas to redraw the state’s congressional map last summer. LCB reporter Matt Laslo asked Ocasio-Cortez about Republican anger over the result in Virginia, a question the congresswoman interrupted in order to poke fun at GOP frustration. Read their exchange below: LASLO: What do you think of Republicans saying that Virginia– you guys getting– OCASIO-CORTEZ: Oh, wah, wah, wah. LASLO: –Democrats getting ten [inaudible] totally unconstitutional and wrong. OCASIO-CORTEZ: Listen, Democrats have attempted and asked Republicans for ten years to ban partisan gerrymandering, and for ten years, Republicans have said no. Republicans have fought for partisan gerrymanders across the United States of America, and these are the rules that they have set. And so if the Republican Party wanted to start this, they did this in North Carolina. They drew out three Democratic members of Congress in North Carolina. They drew out in Texas. They re-did Texas. What they’re just mad at is that they have been accustomed to a Democratic Party that rolls over, doesn’t fight, and takes everything sitting down. And what they’re mad at right now is that we are here in a new day, and we have been asking the Democratic Party to stand up and fight, and now they did, and now the Republican Party doesn’t like the fact that they are fighting against someone who actually will stand up for the American people. So if Republicans decide that they would like to revisit a ban on partisan gerrymandering, I welcome them. We have the bill right here to end this all today. But they don’t want to, because they like pursuing and continuing to enact an unfair electoral landscape, and so we have an obligation to defend ourselves. Reporter: What do you make of Republicans saying that Virginia— AOC: Wah wah wah. We have asked Republicans for 10 years to ban partisan gerrymandering. And for 10 years, Republicans have said no.… [TheTopNews] Read More.

  • Jessica Tarlov Tells Jesse Watters He’s ‘Correct’ for the First Time ‘In...
Fox News host Jessica Tarlov told co-host Jesse Watters he was “correct” on Wednesday while teeing up a discussion, an occurrence she claimed had “never happened in recorded history.” Tarlov’s surprise assertion on The Five came during a discussion about redistricting efforts, after voters in Virginia narrowly approved a mid-decade redistricting map on Tuesday that could give Democrats an electoral boost in ten out of eleven of the state’s House districts. Watters, in a question to Tarlov, noted that President Donald Trump had also played a major role in state gerrymandering, after he pushed Republicans in Texas to redraw the state’s congressional map last summer. “Jessica, you guys have been gerrymandering for quite some time. You are very good at it. Trump tried his hand at it, did it in Texas, got some good results,” he said. “And then you guys have just been running the table. Can you stop? Can you slow down?” Tarlov said Watters had admitted that Republicans “were the ones who started” the redistricting battle, claiming that her co-hosts’ framing of the issue was shockingly accurate. “No. All gas, no brakes,” she responded. “So the top ten gerrymandered states in the country, only two of them are Democratically controlled, by the way, so this isn’t really all about how we’re the evil gerrymandering forse, but you are correct in your setup, which I think has never happened in recorded history, at least of me being on The Five, that you guys were the ones who started it.” The host also said that she had predicted gerrymandering efforts would backfire on Republicans, a claim she said her co-hosts had jeered at at the time. “And I remember when I was talking about and said, ‘This has the potential to backfire and could become a dummy-mander,'” she said. “You said something like, ‘Who cares about a dummy-mander. What’s that weird word you are saying, Jessica?’ This is what it looks like in Texas, where, by the way, the districts, the monstrosity that you showed, districts in Texas span 300 miles.” Virginia’s referendum is the latest in a string of redistricting moves across multiple states after Trump’s Texas push. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) headed up a successful campaign to counteract Texas’s redistricting, adding five possible Democratic seats to nullify the five likely Republican seats added in Texas. A more likely GOP seat was added in Missouri and North Calrionia, with a possible two in Ohio.… [TheTopNews] Read More.

  • ‘He Was Fired’: Fox News Reports Navy Secretary Did Not Leave on His Own
Former Secretary of the Navy John Phelan was fired, Fox News White House Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich reported on Wednesday. Multiple news outlets had reported that Phelan was leaving his post, but it was unclear if he resigned or was terminated. On Wednesday’s Special Report, Heinrich removed all doubt by reporting that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth fired him. The news comes amid the ongoing U.S. naval blockade of Iran. “The Pentagon spokesman just announced Navy Secretary John Phelan is departing the administration, effective immediately, saying, ‘We wish him well in his future endeavors,'” Heinrich said. “It was not immediately clear from this post if he resigned or was fired, but Fox News has learned in the last few moments he was fired. He had a very close relationship, apparently, with Donald Trump Jr. and just hosted a bridal shower for his fiancée this past weekend in Palm Beach.” Heinrich added that Undersecretary of the Navy Hung Cao will become acting secretary. Cao served in the Navy and was endorsed by President Donald Trump in his unsuccessful 2024 Senate bid in Virginia. Phelan is the 34th officer Hegseth has fired, Heinrich noted. The president nominated Phelan, a Republican megadonor, to be Secretary of the Navy in November 2024, despite his lack of military experience. An avid art collector, Phelan was a major donor to the president in 2024, and reportedly hosted Trump at his $38 million Aspen home during the campaign. At the event, Trump went on a profanity-laden tirade against immigrants and claimed that if then-Vice President Kamala Harris won, the 2024 election “could be the last election we ever have.” Watch above via Fox News. The post ‘He Was Fired’: Fox News Reports Navy Secretary Did Not Leave on His Own first appeared on Mediaite.
