Extreme weather is fueling a rise in heart attacks and strokes, with heat waves and cold snaps contributing to the rise, according to new research reported by SWNS.The findings, presented last week at the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC) congress, analyzed data from more than eight million residents of Eastern Poland between 2011 and 2020.During that decade, researchers recorded over 573,000 major cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE).BACTERIA IN YOUR MOUTH MAY TRAVEL TO THE GUT AND TRIGGER STOMACH CANCER, RESEARCH FINDS"Climate change is driving extreme weather events, yet temperate climates remain understudied," Professor Lukasz Kuzma, of the Medical University of Bialystok, told SWNS. "Poland is now seeing unprecedented heat waves alongside existing cold waves."The study found that while both types of temperature extremes are dangerous, they attack the body in different ways.In heat waves, the impact is immediate. On the day of the weather occurrence, major cardiovascular events spiked by 7.5%, while cardiovascular deaths jumped by 9.5%, according to the report.AGING MAY SPEED UP IN AREAS WITH EXTREME HEAT, RESEARCH SUGGESTSThe impact of a cold wave is delayed but sustained. The risk of major events rose between 4% and 5.9% in the days following exposure.Air pollution intensified the risks of extreme temperatures, the data showed. Approximately 13% of all cardiovascular deaths were attributed to pollution, representing more than 71,000 years of life lost over the 10-year period."Our results highlight that the problems of climate change now extend to Northern Europe and demonstrate the considerable combined hazards of temperature extremes and air pollution on increasing cardiovascular events," Kuzma said.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERContrary to traditional medical assumptions, the study found that monthly increases in pollution exposure were particularly dangerous for demographics often considered lower risk. The risk of cardiovascular events was 5% higher in women than in men, and 9% higher in people under age 65 compared to those older than 65.CLICK HERE FOR MORE HEALTH STORIES"Even though air pollution is recognized as a major cardiovascular risk factor, it is still underappreciated," said Dr. Anna Kurasz of the Medical University of Bialystok, per SWNS."These results challenge the traditional risk factor paradigm about which groups of individuals are most susceptible."Looking ahead, Kuzma plans to investigate the impact of light and noise pollution, with the goal of modernizing how doctors predict patient risk.TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ"We also aim to develop a method to incorporate environmental factors… [TheTopNews] Read More.3 days ago - Calling Trump a Tyrant Is Not a Call to Violence
To describe Donald Trump as a corrupt aspiring authoritarian is not to conclude that he should be murdered. This ought to be a simple point to understand. Yet it is lost on a large swath of the American right, who insist that calling Trump what he is causes at least some of his opponents—among them, the accused shooter Cole Tomas Allen—to believe that violence is justified against the president. In an interview with CBS following the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, Trump blamed the most recent attempt on his life on “the hate speech of the Democrats,” which he called “very dangerous.”The New York Post asked on Sunday, “Where did Allen get such ideas about Trump and the need to remove him, via murder?” It answered the question like so: “Almost certainly from the left, including from Democrats in positions of power. Barely a day goes by without some Dem calling Trump an autocrat, a king, a dictator, Hitler.”Also on Sunday, CNN’s Dana Bash asked Representative Jamie Raskin to engage with the premise. “You and many of your fellow Democrats have used some heated rhetoric against the president,” she said. “Do you think twice about that when something like this happens?” And yesterday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt charged, “Those who constantly falsely label and slander the president as a fascist, as a threat to democracy, and compare him to Hitler to score political points are fueling this kind of violence.”This claim suffers three serious defects. First, it assumes that violence is the only logical response to an attempt to undermine democracy. In reality, Trump’s assault on democratic norms can be—and in fact, is being—successfully resisted through democratic means. In Hungary, Viktor Orbán had carried out a more advanced version of the same power-consolidation strategy that Trump is attempting now, and voters defeated him through peaceful organizing.[From the September 2024 issue: American fury]The second problem with a moratorium on calling your opponents authoritarian is that Trump himself routinely violates it. The president has spent a decade calling his rivals communists and traitors, among other hyperbolic insults. He has specifically claimed that Democrats rig elections as a matter of course. Taking violent steps to stop undemocratic political leaders follows much more closely from Trump’s rhetoric than from anything Democrats have said about him.And third, the conservative principle would seem to rule out any criticism of authoritarian tendencies, however real they may be. If calling… [TheTopNews] Read More.3 days ago - Grand Jury Indicts Former N.I.H. Official

Th BMW R 1300 R roadster is upgraded with a more powerful engine, a better handling chassis, and electronic aids. (Photos courtesy BMW Motorrad) There’s something deeply satisfying about threading a proper naked bike through Germany’s rolling landscape, with alpine-fresh air filling your helmet, a boxer’s mechanical concerto playing beneath you, and every bend seemingly custom-designed to make you a more confident pilot. BMW Motorrad’s R 1300 R was born and bred in the foothills of the Alps, and the latest iteration of Bavaria’s twin-cylinder roadster blends refinement, urgency, and a decidedly addictive character. The R 1300 R is technological progress in tangible form. Its boxer engine configuration has been in BMW’s lineup since the R 32 debuted at the Berlin Motor Show in 1923. The R 32’s 494cc boxer made 8.5 hp, and the bike had a top speed of 60 mph. More than a century later, the R 1300 R’s boxer has more than twice the displacement and makes 17 times as much horsepower. It’s also equipped with ShiftCam variable valve timing, IMU-enabled performance and safety features, and radar-based adaptive cruise control and collision-warning systems. You can pair your smartphone via Bluetooth, adjust grip and seat heating, and monitor tire pressure on the full-color thin-film transistor instrument panel. The Performance package includes Lightwhite paint with red and blue accents and other upgrades. All well and good, but what matters most is the riding experience. Most of my time on the R 1300 R was spent hurling through time and space at a brisk pace, where even the most aerodynamic helmet becomes a surprisingly effective nose-flattening device. Cafe racing from village to village across the German countryside was perfect for exploring the bike’s capabilities. All in the Family After debuting on the R 1300 GS in 2024 (Rider’s Motorcycle of the Year), BMW’s new R-series platform migrated to other models. The R 1300 GS Adventure arrived in 2025, and the R 1300 RT luxury tourer, R 1300 RS sport-tourer, and R 1300 R roadster arrived for the 2026 model year. The boxer engine powering the R 1300 R makes 9 more hp and 5 more lb-ft of torque compared to the outgoing R 1250 R. We’ve tested most of these models in prior issues, so I’ll keep things brief. Compared to the previous generation R 1250 platform, the R 1300 has a totally overhauled version of the opposed-Twin engine with more displacement, higher compression, and more power and torque, pumping out 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 110 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm. Throttle response is quintessentially German in its precision, and… [TheTopNews] Read More.3 days ago - Cellular Rejuvenation Has the Potential to Reverse Aging
